Alison Can Read Feature & Follow

This is a weekly blog hop hosted by the wonderful Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. Today's question is:

Q: School is out! What is your favorite Summer Reading book?

School has been out for me for almost a year now lol and even though I don't have a favorite summer book I can say that my favorite genre for summer is contemporary and romance. I'd love to catch up on some new contemporary releases by Susane Colasanti, Jennifer Brown, and Sarah Dessen.

Review: The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro

The Perfume CollectorThe Perfume Collector
by Kathleen Tessaro
Hardcover, 464 pages
Released: May 14th 2013
Publisher: HarperCollins
Purchase: Amazon
*A hardcover copy was provided by publisher in exchange for a honest review.
Synopsis via Goodreads:
London, 1955: Grace Monroe is a young newlywed, eager to make a success of her marriage. However, with her intellectual curiosity and her unladylike talent for advanced mathematics, she finds the routine of elegant luncheons and exclusive parties among post-war London’ s social set more tiresome than exciting.

When Grace receives an unexpected inheritance from a woman she’ s never met, she finds herself suddenly in Paris, embarking upon a journey to discover not only the identity of her mysterious benefactor but also the hidden secrets of her own past.

In a story that takes us from New York in the 1920s to mid-century Monte Carlo, Paris and London, Grace discovers a world filled with the evocative, intoxicating power of perfume; an obsessive, desperate love between muse and artist; and a trail of dark memories that may mean she isn’ t the person she thinks she is at all.

I absolutely love historical fiction and anything having to do with fragrances. So, the fact that the author blended both elements together was both intriguing and cleverly done. The Perfume Collector is beyond exquisite; exploring mystery, societal issues concerning women of two different period in time, and of course, the beauty of romance and how various scents come in to play with intimacy among other things.

This story was truly a journey of self-discovery, and I was intrigued by every thing it had to offer. For one, the main characters. I liked Grace. My perception of the kind of person she was grew the more I read. Her personality came off as kind, accepting, but beautiful without understanding the meaning of the word and how she embodied that within herself. And towards the end you begin to see her character experience growth and start to acknowledge things she was apprehensive about in the beginning. I was happy that the author enabled Grace to breathe in a new found air of independence and come into herself a bit more. And as for Eva, well, I was completely taken by her. As oppose to the life of Grace, Eva's was no fairy-tale  She experienced the good and the ugly, and the fact that she overcame so much was just impressive.

I enjoyed the time frame and moving from one to the other, getting the chance to learn about both women and establish the connection that became quite clear early on. The whole mystery of Grace finding out about Eva and the reason for her inheritance was really well written. By the time I figured it out I wanted to shake Grace and ask, "don't you see?" But her wanting to hold on to HER truth was evident throughout the pages, and the moment she caught sight of what was really real then it all gets even more interesting.

I also felt very enchanted throughout the pages where the inspiration and mere conception of perfumes was often mentioned. The book is in fact titled The Perfume Collector so, the author definitely lived up to my expectations of bringing scents to life. Left me interpret this better (hopefully); the way in which fragrances were described so lavishly, exotically, just had me all caught up in the description. I could envision the process of mixing and creating, and even smell the scents as the scenes consumed me. Way to go Kathleen, I so want to drown myself in your other works after reading this one.

Oh, before I conclude I must mention that I enjoyed the intimate factors of the story; from the 1920's leading up to the 1950's. Everything was well transitioned, perfectly developed, and breathlessly unraveled. Eva and Grace had so much depth and they both intrigued me. I could go on and on about how wonderful this book was for me and I strongly recommend you pick this one up. That's if you're into historical fiction and intense but delightful writing. Regardless, give The Perfume Collector a chance this summer. You'll find yourself lying in a field surrounded by exotic fragrances continually filling your nostrils (Imaginatively, that is).

ParallelParallel
by Lauren Miller
Release Date: May 14th 2013
Publication: HarperTeen
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Abby Barnes had a plan. The Plan. She'd go to Northwestern, major in journalism, and land a job at a national newspaper, all before she turned twenty-two. But one tiny choice—taking a drama class her senior year of high school—changed all that. Now, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Abby is stuck on a Hollywood movie set, miles from where she wants to be, wishing she could rewind her life. The next morning, she's in a dorm room at Yale, with no memory of how she got there. Overnight, it's as if her past has been rewritten.

With the help of Caitlin, her science-savvy BFF, Abby discovers that this new reality is the result of a cosmic collision of parallel universes that has Abby living an alternate version of her life. And not only that: Abby's life changes every time her parallel self makes a new choice. Meanwhile, her parallel is living out Abby's senior year of high school and falling for someone Abby's never even met.

As she struggles to navigate her ever-shifting existence, forced to live out the consequences of a path she didn't choose, Abby must let go of the Plan and learn to focus on the present, without losing sight of who she is, the boy who might just be her soul mate, and the destiny that's finally within reach.

The Moon and MoreThe Moon and More
by Sarah Dessen
Release Date: June 4th 2013
Publisher: Viking Juvenile
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Luke is the perfect boyfriend: handsome, kind, fun. He and Emaline have been together all through high school in Colby, the beach town where they both grew up. But now, in the summer before college, Emaline wonders if perfect is good enough.

Enter Theo, a super-ambitious outsider, a New Yorker assisting on a documentary film about a reclusive local artist. Theo's sophisticated, exciting, and, best of all, he thinks Emaline is much too smart for Colby.

Emaline's mostly-absentee father, too, thinks Emaline should have a bigger life, and he's convinced that an Ivy League education is the only route to realizing her potential. Emaline is attracted to the bright future that Theo and her father promise. But she also clings to the deep roots of her loving mother, stepfather, and sisters. Can she ignore the pull of the happily familiar world of Colby?

Emaline wants the moon and more, but how can she balance where she comes from with where she's going?

Sarah Dessen's devoted fans will welcome this story of romance, yearning, and, finally, empowerment. It could only happen in the summer.

Why I'm Waiting

Both books sound really interesting in their own way. I'd love to read Parallel because I haven't read anything like that in a while so it should be a breath of fresh air from the norm. Also, the Moon and More seems like a great contemporary read with some intrigue.

Review & Giveaway: Requiem for Blood by Alexandra Hope

Welcome to my stop on the Requiem for Blood blog tour, hosted by the awesome Giselle @ Xpresso Book Tours. Check out my review below:

Requiem for Blood
by Alexandra Hope
Released: February 7th 2013

Purchase: Amazon
*Received ebook to review for the tour.

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Seventeen year old Olivia Cohen has always had an appetite for blood and an aversion to the sun as a human and when she is killed by a mysterious young woman, she finds her appetite has heightened and her skin is now burned by the sun. Living her life in a colony with other people who live a "vampire-like" lifestyle, she has grown up hunting humans and believing there is a blood so powerful it will turn them from vampire-like into true vampires. On one of Olivia's final nights as a human she meets eighteen year old Troy Evans and is immediately drawn to the unique scent of his blood. Now as an actual vampire, she must learn how to suppress her need to hunt and kill for his sake and decide if his unique blood is worth saving from those who seek it.

This book is without a doubt not for the modest, but far from grotesque. I would say if you can tolerate the graphic rudiments that pop out in the author's descriptive style of writing then you'll make it to the end.

Requiem for Blood was an interesting read. I liked how different the story was from the usual vampires, and the fact that it didn't start out with "real" vampires to begin with but rather, lunatics in love with the idea of being creatures of the night until it happens for real.

At first, I was a bit confused with what was taking place and I couldn't relate well with the main character but as the story progressed I opened up to her. Olivia's basically a good girl following the teachings of her mother without ever questioning her beliefs. She placed her mother on the highest pedestal ever until the truth began to unravel. Suddenly, Olivia comes to the realization that everything she once believed in was all part of her mother's crazy plans for her. Anyways, that intriguing aspect aside, meaning the mystery surrounding the colony or in my opinion, psychotic cult,  it wasn't a bad read.

The writing was believable; the world building was different. I wasn't bored at all, just at times confused by some details as I read along. Also, there were characters I had a bit of trouble with: Troy and Alexa, along with a few others. To me, they seemed a bit off at some point, and for some reason I couldn't quite soak them in.

Once again, it was an interesting story. There was a sense of uniqueness that pulled me in and I couldn't help but continue on. The scenes came to life in my head, the little element of humor was a nice addition here and there as well, and it was intriguing to read about a character who lived a life as a "pretend" vampire and then transforms into a real one. That was the most interesting aspect of the story to me.

About the Author
Alexandra Hope (a pen name)  was born in New York, raised for the most part in Atlanta, GA and lives somewhere in the German state of Bavaria. Her earliest days of writing were on the back of her tests before she discovered that she could write on her own paper and keep it at home. Lot of good that did her though, she still wrote in school to pass the time and got her writings thrown in the trash by the teacher for all her work. Soon after, she discovered the internet and the world of K-pop fanfiction and is an unabashed fanfic writer, though she hasn’t dabbled in it for a while. She’s also a professional TV watcher and a vocalist in a Japanese band. Seriously.

Excerpt & Giveaway: Renhala by Amy Joy Lutchen

Welcome to my stop on the Amy Joy Lutchen Renhala blog tour, hosted by Giselle @ Xpresso Book Tours. Check out an excerpt from the book below:

Renhala (Book #1)
by Amy Joy Lutchen
Released: September 27th 2012
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:
Kailey Rooke, timid accountant, dedicated to philanthropic work, finds herself spiraling into a deep depression after she suffers a horrifyingly odd and humiliating assault, to only discover more of these freakish assaults occurring across the globe.
A chance discovery leads Kailey to a meeting with elderly Gunthreon, actual master of persuasion. Gunthreon, who seems to know too much of Kailey's history for her liking, opens Kailey's eyes to a coexisting realm she never knew existed: Renhala, while entrusting her with the knowledge of her newfound power as karmelean, serving as a beacon to the Higher Ones. Kailey slowly starts revealing new talents, and Gunthreon is fascinated with what she starts achieving.
She soon discovers that Renhala is in danger, and this danger has been leaking into her own realm. As she uncovers secrets within herself, and attempts to toughen up, she fuses with an unlikely band of fellow travelers (including a dragon, woodsprite, six-hundred-pound greble, her faithful female canine companion, and a "giver"), falls into an unexpected love triangle, deals with her sexy and flirtatious best friend’s “issues,” and finds the courage to master a new deadly weapon.
On her mission to save Renhala, Kailey will find herself running from life-threatening disasters, such as greble Tartarin, who likes to remind Kailey that when he catches her, he plans on eating her brains with ice cream; she'll run from the deadly meeples: small cute bunnies with talons and an undeniable thirst for imposing self-destruction on others. Kailey will also run into the possibility that a centuries-old Renhalan rumor is true, that advanced technology existing in Kailey's realm shortens all life spans.
As blood is shed and puzzles near completion, Kailey pulls from deep within herself, conjuring up mystical qualities that enable her to astonish as once predicted at her birth, but despite the newfound strength, Kailey will discover that monsters not only come in ugly packages, but can be easily disguised as those she has come to love and trust.

Excerpt

Six o’clock means she’ll be here at seven, and that gives me plenty of time to get ready. I can hardly believe I’m the one who initiated a night out, but I’m riding the minute possibility that a few really strong, dirty martinis will crumble a few emotional walls of mine tonight. I’m willing to give it a try, but damn well know the probable outcome: me sitting, totally sober, while already-drunk Amber downs the countless drinks bought for her from overly-anxious meatheads.
I switch on the radio and get dressed while lightly shuffling to “Good Vibrations,” by Marky Mark. As I check myself out in the bathroom mirror, I stare, unhappy with the somewhat low-cut shirt I chose—too revealing. While taking the shirt off, I bend over to plug the iron back in, and then the power suddenly goes out, engulfing me in total darkness.
I freeze for a brief two seconds. Then whirl about, using my hands as eyes in the darkness, searching for any weapons in my bathroom. Realizing that two previous nights ago I walked away with a pocket knife usually stored in the medicine cabinet, I grab my cuticle scissors in one hand and my hairspray in the other. Kioto had only been moaning in her sleep that night I moved the knife, but it sounded so alien. Alien. Alien-like grunting.
The guttural sound of grunting from my assaulter’s throat echoes through my mind as I stand motionless, frozen from fear, remembering the noise as he tore off my cotton panties the day of the assault. I lay there, on my stomach, on top of my newly made bed, staring at Bear—a feeling of despair so great and overpowering pulsing through me. I also remember, too painfully, the blood-curdling scream that escaped my throat as I pleaded to anyone listening, a higher being even, to please save me. Don’t let this happen to me. This shouldn’t be happening to me. I wouldn’t survive feeling that hopeless again.
After my eyes adjust, and as I wait for the sound of footsteps or breathing, I hear neither, so I peek around the door and see Kioto lying on the ground, head turned toward me—possibly perturbed by the roaring sounds emanating from my chest. I walk, shakily, with weapons still in hand, toward the window and I see the whole block is out. A quick check toward the sky reveals the approaching storm. I collapse on my couch and cry like a baby, doubting my ability to function like a normal human being ever again. Kioto walks toward me, and slowly licks my blackened tears from my face. “Thanks, baby,” I say as I snuggle into her and regain my normal breathing.
I wipe my running mascara from my face and gather my composure. A glance at the clock tells me that Amber should be here soon. Sooner than I can fix my makeup, the power goes back on, giving me another heart attack when “Kung Fu Fighting” starts blaring throughout the apartment. What a wonderful start to the evening.
Amber arrives at 7:15 and lets herself in with the key I gave her last week, which was supposed to be for emergencies only. She is absolutely stunning. Her long, straight blond hair complements the lime-green baby-doll dress and her black stilettos. She’s only five foot three, so the extra four and a half inches brings her closer to eye level, but not for long. I decide to wear my knee length, heeled, black boots with my new taupe silk tank top and black pants. I grab my father’s ring off my dresser and slip it into my pocket.
She stares at me and says, “Girl, I need some of that leg length. If you die, can you donate your legs to me?” I laugh and tell her only if she shares some of the endowment on her chest. She’s about a thirty-two E, compared to my thirty-four B.
“You sure you’re ready to do this?” She emanates sincerity.
I shake my head no as the tears fill my eyes and I grab my purse.
